Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Summer Reading Skills Program right for my child?

All entering 2nd graders benefit from improving their reading skills over the summer. In class, the teacher provides support and guidance for each student. Interactive online lessons are tailored to each child’s skill level and needs. Every student makes progress during the program.

What happens in class?

Weekly classes are led by trained, enthusiastic teachers. Every class includes independent reading practice, fluency training, and book discussions, as well as fun games and activities to build phonics skills. Your teacher will work individually with your child to develop his or her skills.

What will my child do at home between classes?

Between classes, your child will complete independent reading assignments and interactive online lessons at the correct reading level. Lessons cover skills like phonics and word attack, fluency, and comprehension. The lessons are easy for students to follow and complete on their own.

How do I choose which level of instruction is appropriate for my child?

Our program combines weekly classes with interactive online lessons between classes.  The classroom instruction is appropriate for all entering 2nd graders, while the online lessons are tailored to each student’s current reading level. When you enroll, you’ll be asked to tell us more about your child’s reading ability so that we can provide the correct online lessons to help him or her grow as a reader.

Use the following guidelines to determine which reading level is right for your child’s online lessons:

Weak Reader — Your child has struggled with reading in 1st grade and experiences frustration while reading.

Average Reader — Your child has been on track with reading in 1st grade.

Strong Reader — Your child has been very successful with reading in 1st grade.

Can I attend class with my child?

Parents are welcome to attend all or part of any class with their child, but are not required to do so. Many parents enjoy observing classes and learning helpful reading techniques they can use at home.

Is it possible to make up missed classes?

If you have a scheduling conflict, you’ll have the option to attend a make-up lesson in another class or take an interactive online make-up lesson. Enroll now in the program with the most convenient schedule for you, then simply call or email us if you need any make-ups.

What is the class size?

To ensure that all students have a great experience, we cap enrollment at a maximum of 18 students. Your child will get personal attention from the teacher and have a chance to actively participate in group discussions.

How much does the program cost?

Thanks to our partnership with the Institute of Reading Development, we are able to offer this exceptional program to local families at a lower cost than other learning programs. During this affordable program, your child will participate in engaging weekly classes, get personal attention from an enthusiastic and encouraging reading teacher, and have access to fun online lessons that build valuable reading skills.
